The Heritage Programme is recognised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation as a leader in Africa in providing those in the service industry with a globally recognised, professional standard for rating their business's environmental and sustainability practices.

Did you know?

The Heritage Standard is a set of criteria developed to address various operational aspects of a business in relation to its environmental performance, and consists of 73 different requirements.

For over a decade, the Heritage Environmental Management Company has been helping businesses and service providers assess and rate their environmental status.

The organisation provided an environmental rating initiative for the hospitality industry in 2001 and has grown from there, awarding a certificate to the Sandton Convention Centre in 2002 to coincide with the Earth Summit held that year in Johannesburg, and working with a range of other clients.

The company’s offering has expanded both in its certification categories and product range, and it now offers solutions to many different players in the services industry. Hotels and accommodation, game lodges and resorts, zoos and aquaria, meetings and events, golf courses, residential estates, banking, retail businesses and business services can all benefit from the work Heritage does. One-hundred-and-fifty businesses across eight African countries are applying Heritage initiatives, making it the leading certification brand in Africa.

Standards are based on internationally recognised sustainability and responsible business initiatives, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 20121. Members of the Heritage network have to undergo an on-site review every year, and if they comply with the standards, they are awarded one of three levels of recognition according to their performance, sustainability and responsible business practices.

Heritage is committed to enabling corporate sustainability and continued environmental improvement in the services sector. This is achieved by applying globally competitive management systems, procedures and operational practice.

The Heritage Programme is recognised by the UN World Tourism Organisation and is partnered with the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa in the Imvelo Awards, held annually to recognise and reward sustainable and responsible tourism standards in Southern Africa.
