Spa therapies using wonderful Cape wines

Vinotherapy is widely-used in health and spa treatments in Europe, and it's become quite popular in the spas of the wine-infatuated Western Cape.

Vinotherapy is extremely popular at a few choice Western Cape spas. Why not try out Constantia Uitsig’s Les Aromes Du Vin signature treatment or the Mount Nelson Librisa Spa’s Vine Secret Vintage Experience? Let chardonnay, pinotage and merlot-inspired treatments inspire you.

The concept of vinotherapy is a relatively new trend in South Africa, but has been available in Europe for many years.

Basically this ‘wine therapy' utilises the skins, seeds and stalks of grapes in various ways – treatments could include anything from facials and body embalming to massages and scrubs. The antioxidant properties of the grapes are excellent in detoxifying the body and skin, while the polyphenals (found in grape seeds) will help to fight free radicals.

Vinotherapy is South Africa, has it's own special brand of creativity. The Librisa Spa at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town has a special head-to-toe vinotherapy experience called the Vine Secret Vintage Experience that includes exfoliation, body wrap, massage and a facial using grapes grown in the nearby Winelands.

The Spa at Constantia Uitsig has a signature treatment called Uitsig Les Aromes Du Vin which is prepared using the age-old tradition of wine blending combined with the science of aromatherapy. The exfoliation is done using specific vine bark, sugar, cloves and juniper berries, followed by an aromatherapy massage using oils especially selected to compliment the wine. The treatment was put together by the Constantia Uitsig winemakers and the spa's therapists.

South African vinotherapy also makes use of our very own homegrown pinotage grape in its treatments. At the Serenite Wellness Centres in Century City and Franschhoek you will be able to enjoy a Pinotage Embalming Ritual or try out the Heard it Through the Grapevine package that incorporates a 60-minute pinotage facial, a 60-minute pinotage body polishing treatment, a body balancing treatment and a foot massage.

The newly re-opened Sante Winelands Hotel and Wellness Centre, set on a 160-ha wine estate in the Drakenstein Valley, offers a Pinotage and Lime Exfoliation Treatment, Pinotage Elixir hydrobath and Aromavine detoxifying Pinotage massage. A 5-star hotel and fine dining restaurant, Sommelier, are on site.

So next time you're in the Western Cape make sure you book yourself a vinotherapy treatment, and afterwards why not enjoy a glass or two of chardonnay."

The Mount Nelson Hotel is in the heart of Cape Town. The Serenite Wellness Centres are found in Century City and Franschhoek. Constantia Uitsig is in the Cape Town suburb of Constantia.

Vinotherapy first originated in the wine-growing French region of Bordeaux.

Vinotherapy uses Cape wines to pamper body, mind and soul.

In South Africa, vinotherapy gives you a brand new way to enjoy our chardonnay, pinotage or merlot... in the private space of a luxury spa.
